President's Podium:
Urgent Alert - Protect Patient Safety in Virginia
Immediate Response Requested

By Suzanne Everhart, DO
President & Fellow, Virginia Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons

Dear Colleagues,

As President of VSEPS, I want to make it clear that the fight to continue to protect patient safety and keep surgery by surgeons in Virginia has only just begun!

VSEPS, in concert with all ophthalmologists across Virginia, is prepared to launch a comprehensive campaign to protect patient safety and ensure surgical care is of the highest quality  in Virginia.  To make this happen, I urgently ask that each of you write a check for $250 payable to VSEPS Patient Advocacy Fund.  Please send your contribution to our Patient Advocacy Fund NOW, so we can get to work immediately.  Please remit your checks to VSEPS: PO Box 3268, Glen Allen, VA 23058. Or click here to donate online. We can't do this without you!

We aim to build a network with 100% participation of our members.  All 100 delegates and 40 senators will be up for election in November 2019. They will be eager to connect with their constituents.  Our lobbying team is ready to help connect you to your state representatives. You can get started by finding your legislators here:

To assist, we are establishing an advocacy committee with regional MD chairpersons effective immediately. We need your name, home address, addresses for all of your office locations, and preferably your cell phone number (for after-hours emergency calls only) sent to Chrissy Cannaday ( This will enable us to identify your respective districts and set up networking. Please do this right NOW. Again 100% participation is vital!

Also, please invite your colleagues to join VSEPS! In doing so, you will help strengthen ophthalmology, protect your patients, and maintain high-quality surgical care – in addition to all of the other benefits of being a member of VSEPS.  As you know, the practice of medicine is changing rapidly. VSEPS is your front line and at the table on both state and national levels to protect you from increased regulations, decreased reimbursements, threats to patient safety and coding changes. We need 100% membership and financial commitment from all Virginia ophthalmologists to continue to protect patient access to high quality and affordable care. Ask your colleagues to visit our website at and join us today!

Finally, remember to register for the annual scientific meeting June 8-9, 2018, Ophthalmology in View: Vision, Innovation, Enterprising and Worldwide Impact, to be held in Virginia Beach. Reduced rate Early Bird registration ends on April 27. To keep your technicians engaged and informed, they can sign up for the annual technician meeting at  and earn valuable educational credits as well.  I look forward to welcoming all new members. I also look forward to the fantastic lectures planned and the hands-on wet lab for manual small incision cataract surgery. Join us for great food, great fellowship and family fun in the sun and surf of Virginia Beach.

Truly yours,
Suzanne Everhart, DO
President VSEPS
