Benefits to Membership

The Virginia Society of Ophthalmology acts to aid and assist members in their relations with patients, hospitals, medical institutions, governmental agencies, and all other groups related to the practice of ophthalmology. 

 

The programs and services offered by the VSO include:

Member Discounts - to offer exclusive benefits to members, including VSO Meeting Registration Fee Discounts, and more.

Media and Public Service Contacts - to serve as an informational resource about ophthalmology to the
Virginia media and to other related public and medical organizations.

Liaison with the American Academy of Ophthalmology and other Medical Organizations - to gain a collective voice in development of policy and programs with the medical community.

Education and Scientific activities - to provide an Annual Meeting for continuing medical education.

Public Service Projects - The Diabetes Initiative and Glaucoma Project.

VSO Website www.vaeyemd.org - to provide members with current society news and alerts, and medical eye health care information for the general public.

Active Fellow
    

An Active Fellow of the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology shall be a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and shall be a member in good standing of the Medical Society of Virginia. Active Fellows have all rights and privileges in the VSO, and my be elected to serve as officers or directors of the Society. Annual dues are $450. (Dues are $100 if Active Fellow is in the first year of practice; $200 if in second year of practice).

Active Member
    

Board certification in ophthalmology or in a specialty related to ophthalmology is optional. Membership in the AAO and MSV is optional. Active Members of the VSO have all rights and privileges as Active Fellows, but may not serve as officers or directors. Annual dues are $450. (Dues are $100 if Active Fellow is in the first year of practice; $200 if in second year of practice).

Member in Training
    

Currently enrolled in an approved residency or fellowship program in ophthalmology, or specialty related to ophthalmology, at an accredited medical school in Virginia or the District of Columbia. Members in training pay no membership application fees orannual dues while in training.

Active Duty Military
     Ophthalmologists serving in active duty in one of the branches of the US Armed Forces shall pay one-half annual dues and shall be afforded the same privileges as they were entitled to as an Active Fellow or Active Member.
Member from Another State Ophthalmology Society
     If you are an active member or fellow of the state ophthalmology society in a state other than Virginia, and you have paid your dues for that society prior to relocating to Virginia, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology, upon verification of your membership status in that state, will honor your membership free of charge for the remaining of the year. Please be sure to note on your application the state ophthalmology society in which you currently hold a membership.
New Member/Fellow Applicant
    

Please complete the new member application form, have it signed by two VSO members or fellows, and mail it to the VSO at PO Box 3268, Glen Allen, VA 23058 (fax: 804-261-9891). The application fee paid by a newly-elected Active Fellow or Member shall cover his/her annual dues until December 31st following his/her election to VSO membership at the Annual Meeting.

Semi-Active Fellow/Member
     Active Fellows or Active Members who are no longer practicing full time as an ophthalmologist (no more than 20 hours per week) may apply for Semi-Active membership status by filing a written request.  A Semi-Active Fellow or Member shall pay one-half annual dues and shall be afforded the same privileges as they were entitled to as an Active Fellow or Active Member.
Second Year in Practice
     This is your second year in full-time practice.
Emeritus Fellow/Member
     An Emeritus Fellow or Emeritus Member shall be an Active Fellow or Active Member who has attained the age of 65 and who is no longer engaged in the full-time practice of medicine.  Emeritus Fellows and Emeritus Members shall not be required to pay dues, shall not be entitled to serve as an officer or director of the corporation, and shall not be entitled to vote
First Year In Practice
     This year is your first year in full-time practice.
