Take
the Pledge!
November is National Diabetes Month
People
with diabetes need to take care of their eyes! There is so much
in life to see.
If
you have diabetes mellitus, you know how your body's inability to
use and store sugar can affect your health. Fluctuations in your
blood sugar can damage your eyes, although you may not notice it
at first. An eye condition known as diabetic retinopathy is one
of the most common complications associated with diabetes, and is
a leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans. Fortunately,
you can reduce your risk of developing vision loss, and other complications
of diabetes, by using common sense and taking good care of yourself.
Take
the PLEDGE I will take control of my life!
- I will keep
appointments with my EyeMD for a yearly dilated eye exam.
- I will
keep my blood sugar under good control and educate myself to check
my blood sugar daily.
- I will
watch my blood pressure and keep it in control.
- I will
exercise, eat a healthy diet and not smoke.
- I will
tell my EyeMD about all the medications I am taking, follow my
medication schedule as instructed, and take the correct medication
at the proper time, and in the correct way.
- I will
seek help through support groups and educational materials.
- If I notice
blurring of my vision, or have difficulty doing close work, or
if my vision becomes spotty or hazy, I will see my EyeMD right
away.
- I will take
care of my eyes because theres so much more in life to see!
