Creating a Vision for the Future

The Virginia Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons is a statewide, non-profit organization comprised of medical doctors and doctors of osteopathy whose mission is to advocate for the best quality eye care through education, legislative efforts and community service.  The Virginia Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons' members are committed to heightening public awareness that eye disease and blindness can be reduced through prevention, and early detection and treatment.  Member physicians are dedicated to the public’s direct access to ophthalmic care.

Originally chartered as the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology in 1920, the Virginia Society of Ophthalmology was incorporated in 1983. In June 2009, the membership voted to change its name to the Virginia Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons (VSEPS). The Virginia Society of Eye Physicians & Surgeons has served to promote and enhance the practice of ophthalmology for its members in a variety of ways, including:

Advocacy - VSEPS seeks to aid physicians practicing Ophthalmology in their relations with patients, hospitals, medical institutions, governmental agencies, and all other groups related in any way to the practice of Ophthalmology.  VSEPS represents Ophthalmology in the Virginia General  Assembly and state regulatory agencies.  In addition, VSEPS members are proud to act as patient advocates and when called upon will work vigorously to preserve the quality of medical eye care in the state.

Community Service - VSEPS members seek to promote eye health and disease prevention for the citizens of
Virginia through community service projects.  VSEPS serves as an informational resource about Ophthalmology to the public, the Virginia media, and to other related public and medical organizations.

Education - VSEPS strives to provide physicians with up-to-date information on economic, legislative, regulatory and practical issues pertaining to medical eye care.  VSEPS seeks to educate Ophthalmologists and their staffs as to the recent changes in the critical area of coding, reimbursement and compliance, and in all levels of practice and risk management.  VSEPS provides an Annual Scientific Meeting for continuing medical education for Ophthalmologists.
